Lefkada is one of the best places in the Mediterranean to learn to sail. It combines reliable summer winds, protected cruising grounds, and a lively harbor town that feels built for sailors. If you are considering a course in the Ionian, this guide covers what Lefkada is like, how the sailing feels, how to get there, and the schools currently operating in the area.
If you know of any additional sailing schools based in Lefkada, let us know so we can keep this list complete.
Where is Lefkada?
Lefkada sits off the west coast of mainland Greece in the Ionian Sea. Unlike most Greek islands, you can drive there via a floating bridge that connects it directly to the mainland. That makes access simple if you’re driving or taking a bus.
There is a fun and social atmosphere here. Charter yachts, flotillas, and training boats move in and out daily. The marina is modern and well organized. Just outside town you will find quiet coves with clear water, perfect for a swim after a day on the water.
Most sailing schools are not based directly in Lefkada Town. They operate out of Vlycho Bay, often spelled Vlicho, on the east coast of the island. This is a naturally protected bay that remains calm even when afternoon winds build outside. The marina is lined with stores, restaurants, and bars that are lively particularly on Fridays when most of the training and rental boats are in harbor for the night.
Sailing in the Ionian
The Ionian Sea is known for manageable conditions and predictable weather patterns. Summer winds are typically lighter in the morning and build through the afternoon. This creates an ideal learning environment because the winds rarely kick-up so high that it’s difficult to handle the boat. The only downside is some days you’ll struggle to get the sails up and may have to motor more.
From Lefkada, you can sail south toward islands such as Meganisi, Ithaca, and Kefalonia. Distances are short and anchorages are plentiful. The waters are generally protected from large swell. It is common to combine marina nights with quiet evenings at anchor in a sheltered bay.
The geography of the Ionian makes passage planning straightforward. You are rarely far from land. There are many well protected stops within a few hours of each other. For students building confidence and sea miles, it is hard to find a better classroom.
How to get there
If you are coming from Athens, you have two main options:
The first is to fly to Aktion National Airport (PVK), also known as Preveza Airport. It is about 20 to 30 minutes by taxi. In the summer there are many direct international flights, especially from the UK and elsewhere in Europe.
The second option is to drive from Athens. The journey takes around four to five hours by car. It’s an easy drive with stretches that are pleasant on the eyes but it’s mostly highway driving. There are also some bus options from Athens which are also a good choice if you don’t to deal with figuring out parking for a rental car.
Sailing Schools in Lefkada
Most sailing schools are based in or around Vlycho Bay because of its protected setting and easy access to open water once training sessions begin. While I’m sure every sailing school is unique it’s important to highlight that they all leave from the same marina, sail around the same area, go to the same stores for supplies, and probably even use the same mechanics and technicians to keep up with the boats. So what will really distinguish your trip is the boat and the people — both the instructor and fellow students.
