Nestled in the northwest corner of Koh Samui island in Thailand sits the Four Seasons Resort now famous as the backdrop for Season 3 of the White Lotus. For guests inspired by the show, Thailand’s waters are a great warm and sunny locale to learn to sail.

Why Thailand Is a Top Sailing Destination

Tropical Weather & Calm Seas: Thailand’s climate makes it a year-round haven for sailors. The country enjoys warm temperatures (usually 77-90°F / 25–32°C) and generally calm seas outside of the monsoon months. Prime sailing is during the dry season from November to February where the weather is a bit cooler, sunny, and with a steady breeze.

Stunning Scenery: Thailand’s islands, beaches, and hideaways are the stuff of postcards. Expect super clear waters, lush islands, and dramatic limestone karsts rising out of the sea. Around Koh Samui, highlights include the Ang Thong Marine National Park – a cluster of 42 protected islands with hidden lagoons and beaches.

Rich Culture & Amenities: Beyond natural beauty, Thailand offers vibrant coastal culture and excellent infrastructure for visiting yachts. Charming fishing villages, Buddhist sea temples, and beachside eateries provide cultural flavor to your sailing itinerary. When you’re ready for port, Thailand has world-class marinas (particularly in Phuket and Pattaya) with full facilities.

Location of Four Seasons Koh Samui (White Lotus Hotel) and Nearby Sailing Centers

The Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui is located at Laem Yai Bay on the northwest tip of Koh Samui. This area is called the “Angthong” district and is about a 30–40 minute drive from Samui’s airport and main tourist hubs. While the resort feels remote and private – true to its White Lotus portrayal – it’s actually not far from local boating points:

  • Distance to Nathon Pier: ~10 km south. Nathon is Samui’s main ferry port (about 15–20 minutes by car). While primarily for ferries, Nathon’s pier is a jumping-off point for some island tours. However, it’s not a yachting marina – bareboat charters around Samui operate on anchor or moorings due to the lack of large marinas on the island.
  • Distance to Bophut (Fisherman’s Village): ~20 km east. Bophut Beach is home to a small sailing and yacht charter scene (often via beach launch). The Samui Sailing School (an informal name for local sailing classes) is based in Bophut, about a 30-minute drive from Four Seasons. Here, you can arrange informal sailing lessons or day charters on smaller keelboats and catamarans. It’s a convenient option for a quick taste of sailing but it’s not a full-fledged RYA or IYT program where you leave with a certification.

Lack of Marinas on Samui: It’s worth noting that Koh Samui doesn’t have a big full-service yacht marina. Yachts typically moor offshore and use dinghies to shuttle back and forth to the island. As a result, formal sailing courses (which often require a stable base and multiple days on a training yacht) are not commonly run on Samui itself. Instead, many sailing schools operate out of larger marinas in the Gulf of Thailand (Pattaya area or Koh Chang) or on the Andaman side (Phuket).

RYA Sailing Schools Near Koh Samui

Andaman Yachting
Andaman Sea, Phuket, Thailand

Location: Andaman Yachting is an independent RYA training centre based in Phuket’s Yacht Haven Marina (north Phuket), specializing in customized sailing courses and skippered sailing holidays. If you’re looking for a private or couples-oriented course as part of a holiday, Andaman Yachting is a top choice. The company is operated by its owner who is a UK-certified instructor with more than a decade of sailing experience in Asia. Andaman Yachting is a more personalized, tailored experience for individuals, couples, and small groups.

Course Types Offered: Andaman Yachting offers both RYA courses and informal “learn to sail” holidays. As a fully recognized RYA Training Centre, you can do all the core courses including the standard Competent Crew and Day Skipper. BUt Andaman Yachting has a flexible approach to its offering  – for instance if you want a group/family learn-to-sail vacation, they can mix training and leisure into a single trip. Or for couples they can do a private RYA Day Skipper course where it’s just the two of you with an instructor on a yacht – essentially a private charter with formal lessons included.

Duration & Cost: Course length follows RYA standards (5-6 day modules). Andaman Yachting often runs courses as a 6-day liveaboard to allow a bit more relaxed pace and exploration time. For instance, a private Day Skipper course might be 6 days/6 nights on board so you aren’t rushed, and you get to enjoy sunset cocktails and gourmet meals at anchor. Pricing is on the higher end given the private, all-inclusive nature: expect roughly $1,400 for a group course, or higher for a fully private one. In return, you’ll get a course and experience that is designed for quality over quantity meant to make a memorable vacation as well as an instructional course.

How to Book: Reach out via the Andaman Yachting website or email to discuss your needs. Because they tailor courses, it’s best to communicate your desired dates, group size, and any prior experience. They often respond with suggested itineraries. Andaman Yachting can fill up during peak season (Dec – Jan) so booking a few well in advance is wise. They require a deposit to confirm, and will send you details on packing and how to meet at Yacht Haven Marina.

ISSA Sailing Schools Near Koh Samui

Sail in Asia
Andaman Sea, Phuket, Thailand

Update:

Location: The Sail in Asia (SIA) Sailing School operates near Ao Yon Beach in Phuket – a short one-hour flight from Koh Samui. SIA is a well-established sailing program in Thailand. The chief instructor has over 40 years sail training experience with RYA, IYT and ISSA trainer qualifications.

Course Types Offered: SIA is an International Sailing School Association (ISSA) accredited program. Some of the courses available include Crew / Inshore Skipper Crew (similar to RYA Competent Crew) and Inshore Skipper (RYA Day Skipper).

Duration & Cost: Like most programs, SIA’s live-aboard courses are typically 5 or 6 days, with at least 4 nights onboard. For example, they schedule Monday–Friday courses that cruise around Phuket, Phang Nga Bay, and Krabi, anchoring at different islands each night. The cost is approximately ฿29,000 to ฿40,000 per person (about $850 to 2,000) depending upon the course. This includes accommodation on the yacht, instruction, course materials, and provisioning of food onboard. Students are responsible for travel to Phuket and any lodging before/after the course. In the evenings, when anchored near shore, students often have the option to eat at a beach restaurant (at their own expense).

How to Book: Contact the SIA sailing school via their website, email or WhatsApp.

IYT Sailing Schools Near Koh Samui

Island Spirit Sailing School
Koh Samui, Koh Chang & Phuket

Location & Overview: Island Spirit (formerly Gulf Charters Thailand) is Thailand’s largest sailing school and an IYT-accredited training center. They operate chiefly out of Ocean Marina Pattaya and Yacht Haven Phuket, but importantly for Samui visitors, Island Spirit also has a charter base servicing Koh Samui and its neighboring islands. In fact, the Island Spirit team repositions part of their fleet to Samui during the Gulf’s best sailing season (typically May–September). This means you can arrange courses or private instruction starting right from Koh Samui’s waters, even if the formal “school” is based elsewhere.

Course Types Offered: As an IYT school, Island Spirit offers the full range of recreational certifications – from the 5-day International Crew course for beginners, up through International Bareboat Skipper, and advanced Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore. They even run a comprehensive 90-day “World Cruising Course” for aspiring professionals. Popular options for travelers include the “Zero to Hero” program (a fast-track combining Crew + Bareboat Skipper in ~10 days), as well as short 2-day Intro to Sailing courses for those who just want a taste. All courses follow IYT’s globally recognized curriculum (which is accepted by many charter companies and maritime authorities).

Duration & Cost: Most certification courses are about 5–6 days. For example, the IYT Crew or Bareboat Skipper courses each run for roughly 5 days with 5–6 nights aboard. Island Spirit’s pricing (as of 2025) is around ฿43,500 in Pattaya or ฿55,500 in Phuket for a 5-day cours – equivalent to about USD $1,200–$1,500. This fee is inclusive of instructor, yacht usage, course materials, and the IYT certificate. If you opt for a Samui-based course, you might charter one of their yachts and have an instructor come aboard for a private course – pricing would be custom.

How to Book: You can book through the Island Spirit Sailing School website. They have a published schedule of courses running twice per month in each location – you can join a scheduled course or request a private course.

What to Expect from a Sailing Course in Thailand

Daily Schedule: A typical day on a live-aboard course starts around 7:00 or 8:00am with breakfast on deck, often at a scenic anchorage. By ~9:00am, you’ll begin the day’s lessons – reviewing a bit of theory or the plan for the day, then getting underway. Expect to spend 4–6 hours of sailing each day. Normally this will be broken into segments of 1-2 hours. You’ll take turns at different roles: steering (helming) the boat, navigating with charts or GPS, trimming the sails, practicing maneuvers like tacking and jibing, and performing safety drills. There will be a lunch break (either onboard in a calm bay or at a beach if near an island with a restaurant). After lunch, more sailing – perhaps a longer passage to the next island. By late afternoon you’ll usually drop anchor at the day’s destination, giving you time to unwind. Evenings are generally free once the boat is secured; students often swim, snorkel, or go ashore for a bit of exploration. On at least one of the nights, you will do an overnight passage (night sailing) – it’s a really cool experience.

Learning Environment: The instructors keep the atmosphere fun and low-pressure. Thailand’s sailing instructors are typically highly qualified (RYA Yachtmasters or IYT Skippers) with years of experience. Many are Western expats or Thais who speak excellent English. They’ll ensure you get hands-on practice for every skill. For example, you’ll practice “man overboard” recoveries, anchoring, docking (where possible), and reading the wind. The ratio is often 1 instructor to 3-5 students, so you get plenty of personal coaching and the ability to ask questions. By the end of the course, you’ll have not only textbook knowledge but real experience handling a yacht.

Boat Types: Training usually happens on 38–44 foot sailing yachts, the same kind used for charter vacations. These boats have comfortable cabins, a small galley (kitchen), and bathroom (marine head) – it’s definitely cozy but that’s part of the adventure. The yachts are fully equipped with all safety gear, navigation instruments, and some even have A/C (dockside).

Overall, you can expect a full-day of activity, learning, and leisure. Even though it’s a course, it’s understood that you’re on vacation too.

Tips for Booking a Sailing Course near the White Lotus hotel

Plan around with the seasons: Koh Samui’s peak weather differs from nearby Phuket. If you’re visiting in the Koh Samui dry season (December–February), that’s also the high season for Phuket – a great time to tag on a Phuket sailing course (cool winds, calm seas). If you’re visiting Samui in the summer months (June–August), Phuket will be rainy and you’re better off booking a course on the Gulf side.

Book in Advance (Especially in Peak Season): Sailing courses, especially RYA ones, can fill up fast during holidays and peak travel periods. Aim to book a few months in advance. RYA courses often have set start dates, so keep that in mind when booking flights and hotels.

Final Thoughts

Taking a sailing course near the White Lotus Thailand hotel is a super cool vacation idea. You’ll learn a skill and have one of the coolest stories to tell. Imagine returning home not just with photos of luxury villas and beach sunsets, but with a sailing certification and memories of navigating tropical waters, anchoring at hidden islands, and working as part of a real crew. It’s an experience that blends adventure, personal growth, and indulgent travel—all in one unforgettable trip.
