The closest airport to Opua is Kerikeri Airport (KKE), also known as Bay of Islands Airport, which is about a 20-25 minute drive away. Kerikeri has connections from Auckland. For international arrivals, Auckland Airport (AKL) is the main gateway, from where you can take a domestic flight to Kerikeri or make the scenic 3.5 to 4 hour drive north to Opua by rental car or shuttle bus.
The prime sailing season in the Bay of Islands is during the New Zealand summer and shoulder months, generally from November through to April. This period offers warm weather, more reliable sea breezes, and generally settled conditions, perfect for enjoying RYA courses and exploring this beautiful cruising ground.
