Located in Avila Beach, California, the San Luis Yacht Club offers sailing classes aboard their flagship, the 30-foot Bermuda sloop Second Wind, on the scenic waters of Avila Bay. The programs are designed for individuals aged 16 and up and follow the ASA 101 beginner level standards, covering fundamental sailing concepts such as boat parts, crew communication, tacking, jibing, sail trim, safety procedures, and more. Classes are currently scheduled through Cuesta College Community Programs, with all necessary information on class schedules, fees, and registration available on their website. During COVID-19, classes are held outdoors and with safety protocols in place, including mask requirements and limited time inside the boat’s cabin.

The Area
Located on the scenic shores of Avila Beach, our sailing program offers students an authentic experience aboard the 30 ft. Bermuda sloop Second Wind. The learning environment is outdoors and accessible, with classes held at the Mermaid Market beside the boat hoist in Port San Luis. This setting provides a comfortable and practical space for instruction, allowing students to focus on foundational sailing skills while enjoying the beautiful coastal surroundings. Our approach emphasizes hands-on learning, safety, and clear communication, making it an ideal place for beginners to start their sailing journey.
Getting There
To reach the San Luis Yacht Club in Avila Beach, start by flying into San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport (SBP), the closest major airport. From the airport, you can rent a car or use a ride-hailing service such as Uber or Lyft to drive approximately 15 miles west to Avila Beach. The drive typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes. If you're arriving from a major city like Los Angeles or San Francisco, you may also choose to fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) or San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and rent a car for the approximately 200-mile drive north to Avila Beach. Once in Avila Beach, follow local signs to Front Street, where the sailing school is located at 443 Front St., near the waterfront.
Best Time to Go
The best time to sail in Avila Beach is from late spring through early fall, typically from May through September, when the weather is warm and the winds are steady. Mornings tend to be calmer, making for a more relaxed experience on the water.
