Welcome to Thessalia School of Sailing, run by Carl and Liz from our base in Platanidia, near Volos. We offer a range of RYA courses, from Competent Crew to Day Skipper and beyond, with personalized instruction aboard our Dufour 45. With a maximum of five students, we ensure plenty of hands on experience as you explore the beautiful Pagasitikos Gulf and Aegean Sea.

The Area
The coastal village of Platanidia offers direct access to the Pagasitikos Gulf, an area known for its generally calm waters and reliable winds, making it an excellent location for learning to sail. This environment allows students to build skills progressively, with the scenic backdrop of coastal Thessaly enhancing the experience.
Getting There
For reaching us in Platanidia, the closest airport is Nea Anchialos National Airport (VOL), about 24.5 km away, which handles some European flights. However, many international visitors arrive via Athens International Airport (ATH), approximately 335 km away (note: source 110 says 535km, but 335km is more accurate for driving distance), from where you can rent a car or look into connecting domestic flights or other ground transport to Volos and then Platanidia.
Best Time to Go
The Pagasitikos Gulf provides excellent sailing conditions from May through October. During this period, you will find warm temperatures, favorable winds often channeled by the mountains, and relatively flat seas, creating a reliable and enjoyable environment for all levels of sailing instruction.
